Almost every time there is an update in Windows 10 it causes some kind of issue with my WD Passport software. The November update totally corrupted my WD Passport and I had to get a new one (which thankfully was under warranty). Thew last couple of updates have caused my WD icons to disappear. They used to be on my desktop, but I discovered through correspondence with WD that Windows now only allows WD icons to be pinned to the Taskbar or to Start.
There was an update a few days ago and again my WD Smartware icon disappeared and I had to repin it. I'm hoping that when it disappears from the Taskbar that it is still backing up my files (as I have it set to back up continuously.) What is going on with Windows & WD?! Kathy, Whoever at WD told you that you couldn't pin their icons to the desktop is looney tunes; mine have been glued on there since prior to WIndows 10. WD Smartware/Quickview are kind of notoriously unstable: that's why they discontinued including it on most of the newest models but kept up with WD Backup (you can still download Smartware and Pro from the WD site).
When I ran on continuous backup with Smartware, I realized after a while that it wasn't actually recording any file changes. As a test, I made a small change to one document and added a new document, saved them, left my computer and Smartware running for three hours, came back, and it hadn't yet found the change or the new file but gave me the 'files backed up' notice.
Between that and it crashing all the time or acting weird after every update, I uninstalled Smartware and started using WD Backup, and it's been flawless ever since. I'm not bashing WD; I love my WD external hard drive, but beware the Smartware and consider switching over to WD Backup. It would be really tough to lose all your files even though you were responsible enough to buy a hard drive and run backups regularly like every good pc owner should. Hey there Kathy:) I'm sorry to hear for the troubles. As RDrewD2 pointed out, you should have any problems with pinning your icons to the desktop. I would contact MS's support regarding this as they might have more info on why does this occur. Regarding your data safety, I would try to keep backups of the data both on your computer and on the drive just to be on the safe side that you won't lose any in case either fail to hold it.
WD My Passport features hardware encryption that can't be turned off and the data can't be read unless you have the password (if you've set one) and the drive and the enclosure and OK. I would strongly advice you against opening the drive. Feel free to ask if you happen to have any questions!
