We developped a USB soundcard that is used in our system. We use the USB Audio drivers provided by Microsoft in Windows. It is working fine in Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 (x86 and x64 and even Embedded 7 and 8) as well as Linux. However a customer reported an issue with Windows 10 so we tried it and it doesn't work anymore. The soundcard is detected as expected.
Once again I have installed a Sound Blaster card for my sound device on my new PC. Over the years, I've used SBs as I've usually found them to work well and provide the best sound on my PCs. I brought a new Dell, and it came with on board sound and graphics. An external sound card not only bumps the audio output of your favorite PC or Mac, but it also adds new features, such as Dolby Surround and digital-to-analog conversion, among others. If you have no budget constraints, the Creative Sound Blaster X7 is the external sound card to go for. The most feature-rich pick in this roundup.
However, when we go to Playback Devices, double-click on the soundcard, go to the Advanced tab and click on Test, we get an error window that says 'Failed to play test tone.' As a test, I tried a standard Creative Labs external USB soundcard and I experience a similar issue. When I click on Test, I hear a pop and then the application hangs.
However if I install the Creative Labs Windows 8 drivers (so it doesn't use the Microsoft USB audio drivers anymore), it is working fine. Is there a known issue with USB audio soundcards?
It is a major issue for our customers since we must tell them not to upgrade to Windows 10 for now.
